I always call mine "bro" or "my son". Rarely do I ever actually say his name lol.

My cats name is Chanelle, but I rarely call her that. Her nickname is kitty cat ribs the 2nd, but I usually call her either kitty or ribs. Back story behind the nickname is my best friend had a cat when we were kids, and when he'd annoy him he'd threaten to cook him up like a rack of baby back ribs, so we started calling him kitty cat ribs.

The only cat I really talk to is a stray born on my patio I named Princess. She only comes when I call her by name.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Only by her name Luigi, so she'll learn it. That way I KNOW she's ignoring me.

Harley was a 7 year old we brought home from the shelter, and she already knew her name so we didn't have a lot of latitude to change it on the fly.

However, she did respond just as well to "Barley", so that became her new name, with the standard variety of variants like "Barles" (said like "Charles"), "Barlow" or "Barlikins".

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 2 months ago

Barlikins 😂

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Nope.

Always one of 3 or 4 nicknames.

[–] Griffus@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Almost everyday, but mostly a shorthand or a handful of nicknames.

[–] essell@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Likewise. Many of those nicknames being elaborate phrases which include his name. He loves this.

[–] Bluefruit@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I call my cat Sydney by a few names. Mr kitty, Mr meow, or buddy.

But in will call him by his name every once in a while.

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I almost exclusively use ridiculously cutesy nicknames for them because they are perfect.

[–] Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I exclusively call Simon by his name. He knows when I'm talking to or about him!

[–] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

My ex fiancee named my last cat Mittens, but I pretty much always just called her "Kitty". She responded to it, but I always kinda got the impression she responded to me in particular over whatever I called her.

[–] TastyWheat@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

I call Levi by his name, but when he's playing up my partner (who is from Singapore) calls him AYO UNKER GET DOWN AH

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 2 months ago

Both Mimi and her son Zigou respond to their names. Orange Zigou is not the brightest, so I value and use the fact the he did learn his own name.

[–] SolidShake@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

My cat's name is pstpstst

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

My cat only had a couple. My dogs, however, they have probably a dozen each.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Oh yes. I call them by their names and they know their names.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

Yes shortened nicknames mostly

[–] soulBit@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 months ago

Cthulhu gets called whatever name we currently feel she deserves - Lady Meowington, Catthulhu, Catto, Little Miss Muggins. We would only use her actual name to call her/scold her for being naughty

[–] waggz@programming.dev 2 points 2 months ago

mostly... Gadget becomes Gadg or Gadgeypoo, Nova becomes Nova beans.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 2 points 2 months ago

I call my cat by his name. Not his full name, just the first name unless he's being formally introduced or in a lot of trouble.

Nope, he gets called Meow Meows or Kitties.

[–] CharlesReed@fedia.io 2 points 2 months ago

I mostly call mine by her name, but sometimes she's Lil Stinky Butt, sometimes Miss Ma'am (especially when she's in trouble), lately she's been Freebird because she keeps trying to get out the doggy door with the puppies. Edit: In the time since I've posted this, she's also gone by Honey Buns and Little Miss.

[–] Alpha4@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

His name is Rio (sing it). Alternatively called 'Mr Krasnapolsky' or 'Laddy'or 'Mr Pussycat'.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I actually call the kitten kitten often. Or by your username, lol. Cats are dinguses! Sometimes I call her gremlin or Muppet (she's so soft and fuzzy and huggable like I imagine a Muppet)

Her government name is for the vet!

[–] oopsgodisdeadmybad@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Sometimes. Usually I do a lengthier riff on it.

I have 2, Link and Phoebe.

I'll do a "Linky Link" and "BB Phoebe" (as in baby) because I refuse to acknowledge that she's not still a baby.

[–] Australis13@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago

Yep, they know their names but are typical cats in not consistently listening when I call them.

[–] tomiant@piefed.social -3 points 2 months ago

On more than one occasion have I seen acquaintances try to reason with their cats and warn them that if they don't stop doing this or that then they will face various consequences, and when the cat inevitably keeps doing it because they literally don't speak human language, they punish them. Some people anthropomorphize their pets to a disturbing degree and talk to them like children would to an imaginary friend. It's deeply unsettling to me.
