On more than one occasion have I seen acquaintances try to reason with their cats and warn them that if they don't stop doing this or that then they will face various consequences, and when the cat inevitably keeps doing it because they literally don't speak human language, they punish them. Some people anthropomorphize their pets to a disturbing degree and talk to them like children would to an imaginary friend. It's deeply unsettling to me.
