Video-based content is already difficult to effectively moderate, because problematic content might be showcased visually, without keywords an automated AI might be able to check. And TikTok users are known for inventing shorthand and coded language specifically to evade censorship. There’s corn — or even just a corn emoji — for discussing porn, or “seggs” for sex. In the world of antisemitism, “H!tl3r” or “that Austrian painter” helps users talk about Hitler without detection.

Two female journalists, who were released on bail from prison in Iran on Sunday, having spent 17 months in jail for reporting on the death of Mahsa Amini*, have been charged under the country’s hijab laws after pictures were published of them celebrating their release with their heads uncovered.

*In 2022, Iran was gripped by protests following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian of Kurdish origin who had been arrested three days earlier for allegedly breaching the Islamic dress code for women.

The report, from the Network Contagion Research Institute at Rutgers University, could raise new concerns about whether Beijing influences the content on the popular video app. Representative Josh Gottheimer, Democrat of New Jersey, said the report showed that TikTok was “a tool to brazenly spread disinformation and suppress content that undermines the Chinese government.”

The year was 1989. The future Hamas leader, then the group’s internal enforcer, would be convicted of killing four fellow Palestinians.

He described making a Hamas member call his brother — a suspected collaborator — to arrange a meetup, recalled Michael Koubi, who spent more than 150 hours questioning him for Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic intelligence agency. Sinwar made the fighter bury his brother alive.

There are only a handful of child hostages left inside Gaza. Under the agreement struck between Israel and Hamas, under-19s were supposed to be released from captivity. On the sixth day, five more were freed, and almost 40 have now been returned home in total. But so far, Aisha and Bilal haven't been among them.

“Every time a child cried, they would threaten him with a weapon to shut him up.”

She added: “I wanted to believe that Eitan would be well treated. Apparently not. Those people are monsters.”

Eitan’s whole family, including his mother and two sisters, aged 10 and 20 months, were abducted on what some in Israel now refer to as “Black Saturday”.

Quote: "We must teach Israel a lesson, and we will do it again and again. The Al-Aqsa Deluge [the name Hamas gave its 7 October onslaught - ed.] is just the first time, and there will be a second, a third, a fourth. Will we have to pay a price? Yes, and we are ready to pay it. We are called a nation of martyrs, and we are proud to sacrifice martyrs."
