I don’t get how so many can claim ‘confusion’ over the whole ‘pronoun thing’. And I know it’s just thinly veiled bigotry, but like why does everyone complain about it and why doesn’t everyone else call them out for being a dumb ass?

How hard can it be to understand respect, and how being recognized as the gender you are is validating? Really? Is it really so hard?

You know how I explain it for people that don't get it?

You don't assume someone's name.

You don't walk up to a complete stranger and say "Hey bob, nice to meet you".

So why would you assume any other part of their identity?

Convenience. Many communicative norms, even things like standard goodbye/hello stuff, is engrained in cultures for convenience. Why should people have to think hard about the basics of interaction? Though as an autist, social norms have always been difficult for me, so it was just a minor speedbump on the road of life to learn how to not be awkward around trans people.

Though convenience is the same reason cliche Boomers/karens will complain about anything. They're so privileged that any inconvenience is tentamount to an insult directed at them. So, when someone comes in and says, "nono, you have to do something different for me.", all they think is, "I'm being inconvenienced, and for this thing I don't understand, wtf!"

As usual, it all boils down to selfishness. Way too many selfish, close-minded idiots in the world.

Now I kind of want to go to a complete stranger and say hi Bob...

To clarify, you're referring to this portion of the article:

Newsom then appeared on the Shawn Ryan Show, another far-right podcast, where he expanded his rhetoric. He downplayed transgender people’s pronouns, saying, “I'm trying to understand as much as anyone else the whole ‘pronoun’ thing.”

Digging into the detail link gives a smidge more context on the quote, but not much...

Naturally, Ryan’s line of questioning didn’t stop with sports, either. He suddenly turned to the idea of trans kids in general. “Is eight years old too young?”

“The trans issue for me is so novel,” Newsom said. “I'm trying to understand as much as anyone else the whole ‘pronoun’ thing.”

I don't interpret that as genuine confusion over trans identities and pronoun use. That's straight-up pandering; doing a pantomime of having a boggled mind to endear himself to the host and his audience.

It's a transparent falsehood; disingenuous, cheap and ridiculous. These are not qualities befitting of someone seeking the highest office, let alone at a time when the nation teeters on the brink of fascism.
