I don't think its glass. I think its textured translucent plastic. Which is better for turtles, it makes them feel more enclosed and safe. Sometimes they'll also try and walk through clear glass because they either can't see it or they're dumb. Probably both.
You're actually spot on! Though having lived with them for so long, I've developed a suspicion that, while dumb, they do understand transparency. This guy regularly climbs up the rocks and watches out the clear panneling on the side of the tank without ever trying to walk through it. He does however, ram the front of the tank full force despite it being scuffed enough for him to know it's there. I'm pretty sure he understands that this is the side that opens when I bring him food and he's decided he's just going to get it himself.
Also he comes up to this slot and watches me while I work on the computer. Isn't even spooked when I peak back.
