A shocking photo depicting the dismembered body of a Ukrainian prisoner of war has appeared online. The photo shows separated body parts, including the head, arms and legs, which is a gross violation of the Geneva Convention and international humanitarian law.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, urgently appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations (UN) to record this crime and launch an international investigation. According to international humanitarian law, prisoners of war must be protected from physical injury, violence and killing, and any violations of these norms must be held accountable.

“This is not just a violation of the Geneva Convention, it is horrific and inhumane behavior,” emphasized Lubinets. “Prisoners of war are in the hands of an enemy state, and this state is responsible for their treatment. In this case, the responsibility lies not only with Russian soldiers, but also with Russia itself.”

Hungary and Slovakia are rejecting the European Commission’s proposal to use spare capacity on the JANAF Adriatic pipeline in Croatia to supply both countries with oil not sourced in Russia as “Croatia is simply not a reliable country for transit,” Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said.

“It is a politically deeply offensive statement that we did not expect from the representative of the country to which ill-intentioned moves we have long responded with extreme restraint and moderation,” Croatia’s Foreign Minister Gordan Grlic Radman said.

Slovakia, whose Hungarian-owned Slovnaft refinery already takes some oil via JANAF, also known as Adria, said on Friday it received a letter from the Croatian government offering to secure supplies.

[...]

Janaf dismissed the allegations in a statement, saying that it has been continuously investing into its transport-storage system.

It said it has tested its transport capacities on the section towards Hungary along with Hunary's MOL and proved it can transport 1.2 million tonnes of crude oil monthly.

“It is totally untrue that Janaf raised its fees in the past three years,” it said in the statement.

“Janaf is ready both technically and organisationally to supply the central European refineries with enough quantities of oil for the full capacity work. That is why we hope that we would find a satisfying solution for the continuation of long-term partnership through open talks and cooperation,” it said.

“Obviously we [Taiwanese] were targeted because Chinese fans were sitting in the front row seat on the lower level holding a Chinese national flag that exceeded the size allowed by the IOC” (International Olympic Committee)," said Sandy Hsueh, president of the Taiwanese Association in France.

A staff member told her they had “received an instruction from the Olympic Games saying that anything related to Taiwan or showing Taiwan cannot appear,” Hsueh said.

Many spectators recorded evidence of a Chinese woman holding a mobile phone, who stood next to the security personnel and directing them to confiscate signs and banners from Taiwanese supporters, Hsueh said.

Another supporter took pictures of the woman thanking the staff and volunteers after the game and giving them badges, she said.

The incidents follow similar scenes during Lee and Wang’s semi-final on Friday, when a Taiwanese spectator’s banner was snatched by an unidentified man, who was reportedly ejected by venue staff.

Today I got gifted four cans of Tyskie directly chilled from Poland. Its one of my Favuorites - but you still don't have Pfand.

You guys should step up and demand it immediately. Ecologically we admire + require you but still you don't require returing back aluminium cans. Nor plastic/etc. bottles. And I am assuming neither at glass bottles.

You guys should go onto the streets for 100% compatibility with your silenced Neighbours. Lets strenghten our civilian bonds <3.

Its like the requirement of catalyst after 1999. The snow at last was white(ish) again.

The European Union is considering the possibility of expelling Hungary from the Schengen Zone due to its recent decision to ease visa restrictions for Russian and Belarusian citizens.

A growing backlash has emerged against Hungary’s move to simplify visa requirements, which includes a new national card program for extended stays and work permits. This policy change, which followed a visit to Moscow by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has drawn sharp criticism from EU lawmakers.

The lawmakers have also suggested that if Hungary does not amend its policy, the European Commission and EU representatives should consider new measures to protect European citizens. This could include increased border controls at Hungary’s borders and the possibility for other EU states to not recognize Hungarian visas.

The letter, which has collected nearly 70 signatures, including from former Belgian and Irish prime ministers, highlights the escalating tensions within the EU over Hungary’s foreign policy decisions.

After a young man killed three young girls aged between 6 and 9 and injured many more in the town of Soutport in England.

Soon later, information on Twitter, now known as X, surfaced online claiming that the perpetrator was a 17-year-old Muslim refugee. This was not true, as the murderer, Axel Rudakubana, was born in Britain and had lived in the country all his life in a family of Rwandan origin.

Nevertheless, the fake news had an impact. A tweet claiming the murderer was a Muslim amassed 27 million views, igniting unrest across the nation.

The source of this misinformation was the site Channel3 Now, which poses as an American news agency but is not. Channel3 Now mostly collects and publishes fake news and has roots tracing back to Russia. The site's YouTube channel, launched 12 years ago, originally featured videos in Russian from the city of Izhevsk. In 2019, this changed to English-language content about the Middle East.

Channel3 Now picked up a tweet by Bernie Spofforth, known for spreading conspiracy theories. Although Spofforth deleted his tweet almost immediately, Channel3 Now managed to share it and did not remove it. Channel3 Now became the source from which the misinformation spread through social networks and into other media. Leaders of the English Defence League also propagated it.

The resulting riots are still ongoing in various cities across the UK. Despite the fake news being debunked long ago, the riots continue. Local police are urging people not to participate, as civilians, local businesses, public places, and police officers are suffering, with several officers already injured.

In essence, Russian fake news have sparked large-scale riots across the UK, demonstrating the power of this type of weapon.

According to research by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), the sustainability reports of energy companies cover exactly 23% of incidents against biodiversity. Nearly half of the adverse events caused by these companies are not even mentioned in their sustainability reports.

A study by the UPV/EHU’s Research Group on Circular Economy, Business Performance and Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals reveals that energy companies conceal 47% of the damage wrought on biodiversity as a result of their activity. 47 events relating to 30 major energy companies in the Euro area (cases of deforestation, electrocution of birds, habitat destruction, etc.) were analysed, and 22 of them did not even get a mention in their sustainability reports.

“European directives oblige large companies to publish documents relating to the environment and biodiversity, but the information that has to be included in them is not fully specified. Each company decides which aspect to cover. So they act freely and soften their image,” said researcher and study author Goizeder Blanco.

Indeed, energy companies were found to disclose, with clarity, only 23% of the events that threaten biodiversity.

The European Commission has made TikTok's commitments to permanently withdraw TikTok Lite Rewards programme from the EU binding. These commitments have been submitted by TikTok to address the concerns raised by the Commission in the formal proceedings opened against TikTok on 22 April and ensure compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA).

“The available brain time of young Europeans is not a currency for social media — and it never will be,” said Thierry Breton, Commissioner for Internal Market.

This is the first case the Commission closes under the DSA, 105 days after the opening of the proceedings.

The Russian subsidiary of Austria's Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) said on Monday it had temporarily suspended the opening of new brokerage accounts as European regulators demand the group reduce its Russia exposure.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has told euro zone banks still operating in Russia to cut their ties. ECB Banking Supervision has asked all banks with significant exposure to Russia to speed up their de-risking efforts by setting a clear roadmap for downsizing and exiting the Russian market.

"Due to the ECB's directive to RBI Group, Raiffeisen Bank is forced to reduce the volume of operations on the Russian market," Raiffeisen Bank in Russia said.

"At this stage, we decided to temporarily suspend the opening of new brokerage accounts from July 26, 2024, for retail investors."

The bank said existing accounts would be serviced as usual.

RBI is the largest Western bank in Russia, still making more than half of its consolidated profits in Russia.

This fall, the ECB demanded Raiffeisen by cut back on loans in Russia paring back international payments from Russia by 2026. The U.S. has warned RBI that access to the U.S. financial system could be curbed because of its Russia dealings.
