Retconing things to protect muh precious twists is not compelling, though, it's just base metagaming. The unwavering plot is the GM equivalent of the 8 page main character syndrome PC backstory. If I found out my GM was doing that, they wouldn't be my GM anymore.

Way to unlovk splash damage as the new Battleship meta

Weird. I wonder why the formatting broke. I'm going to fiddle with it some more.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 3 points 7 months ago

Some things you need to know about LLMs:

  1. They are probabilistic text generators, which look at their training data (in a very abstracted way) and go "based on what's written here, what's most likely to come next?

  2. They treat numbers like any other word or phrase

This means, when using them for TTTPGs, they will treat everything like it's 5e, because 5e dominates the discussion, and that any numbers they spit out will only be right by accident.

I also (don’t lynch me) think that combat should be an RP experience. That could be my love for certain systems where you get bonuses for good, accurate descriptions and not simply, “I roll. I hit. I do X damage.”

Combat should be a RP experience regardless of system. What you're describing is one where proactive roleplay is a mechanical system, and I'll be honest, as someone who's never entertained a career in the theatre, or as a pompous grim fiction writer with too many thesauruses lying around, fuck that god awful fucking noise. But the choice of what to do, and how you react after the roll should be informed by the fiction of the game and the fiction of the combat, and that is roleplay.

The fact that much of the discourse around the games and resources available to players is focused on min/maxing number munchers is a social problem, not a system one.

It's also green accents, for PDFs. Particularly look to the "Second Edition" tag in tag in the upper right corner. Those are the ORC books.

Welcome aboard! We're a small community here, but active. Please feel free to pepper us with questions.

It, uh, helps with community visibility.

The green-trimmed 'x Core' books are replacements for the red/tan-trimmed books. They're fundamentally the same, with some language changes, class touch-ups, and minor rule updates. The mapping from old books to replacement books is:

  • Core Rulebook -> Player Core
  • Advanced Players Guide -> Player Core 2
  • Gamemastry Guide -> GM Core
  • Monster Core -> Bestiary

It's worth keeping in mind that the contents of all of the rule books is available for free in multiple places online, most famously on the Archives of Nethys website, but also piecewise on pf2easy.com.

Indeed. Though, it's a little more complex than that for spells or attacks that use multiple dice. The interactions aren't linear, and the overall effect when using large dice pools is actually subdued.

Inner Radiance Torrent, at Rank 2, does 4d4 damage, and E[4d4] = 10. But E[4d4c1] = 11.5, rather than 12.5.

Things get even weirder with larger dice, since cascading provides the potential for more rolls, but done at lower dice sizes. E[1d6] = 3.5, and so E[4d6] = 14. But E[1d6c1] works out to be about 15.9, so we're gaining less than 2 damage. A Rank 3 Fireball has E[6d6] = 21, while E[6d6c1] = 23.875, a gain of less than 3.

And this is lower than the naive expectation, because E[1d6e1] = 4.083 and 4*E[1d6e1] = 24.5.

Compare this to increasing the die size. IRT would have an expected roll of E[4d6], which, again, is significantly higher than 11.5, while Fireball at 6d8 has E[6d8] = 27 (vs 23.875). So, this is providing a comparatively small boost.

But, of course, this all assumes fair rolling. When you see what's happening at my table -- which I believe is mostly caused by less than vigorous rolling -- the difference gets even smaller. Assuming a 50% chance of getting a 1 (so weights of [3, 1, 1, 1] on a d4, or [5, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1] on a d6), we end up with E[4d4c1*] = 11, and E[6d6c1*] = 23.25.

The game-impact:enjoyment ratio winds up being quite high. Much higher than I had expected.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

So, like, 2d4!/2d4x? Or is it 2d4!4? 2x4?

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Not that I've seen, but again, my breadth of experience isn't all that great. You'd have to define the number of dice, the number of faces, and the cascade trigger though, so something like [N]d[F]c[T] could work, e.g. 1d6c6 or 2d4c1.

A similar notation with e instead of c could be used to denote exploding dice.

u/double_blammit posted a new guide to the remastered Oracle over on r/Pathfinder2e that may be worth checking out. Their announcement post is quoted below.

I've finally finished up my remastered oracle guide (or near enough to put it out there). I've got a few last touches I'm putting in place for some Divine Access recommendations, but as a whole, it's finished. The last section that needs some love is items, which is where I'll be spending the bulk of my time this weekend.

There's a high likelihood that I haven't quite ironed out all the editing / conversion mistakes I wanted to. Feedback is very welcome!

Divine Gift: A Guide to the PF2e Oracle [Remaster]

I've also posted my Divine Access spreadsheet in a few scattered comments, but I've made some updates to it that should improve its value for spell selection.

Divine Access Spells [Remaster]

Shout out to u/w1ldstew, u/xxKhronos20xx, u/olu_igokra, u/lumgeon, u/Sovjohn, u/Basil06, and u/Suspicious_Agent for various reasons of being oracle stans and helping me out with guide issues, requests, and advice.

Over on Reddit, u/ThreeDaysGuy announced a new Godot-based combat manager that they've been working on for Pathfinder 2e. Unlike the vast majority of PF2e tools, this one's an actual, honest-to-goodness desktop application.

It's still rather young, and it's not feature complete yet. It's pulling creature data from the PF2 Foundry module, and is a few months behind on updating that.

The author has Windows binaries up for download on Itchi.io, but the program is platform neutral. They just don't have any pre-compiled binaries for Linux or Mac yet (you can build your own using the Godot compiler). The code repository can be found here: https://github.com/Zain-A-Abbas/PF2E-Combat-Driver

We're starting to see some action in the system neutral space again. There's this fascinating trend happening right now -- and maybe this is just an evergreen phenomenon that I haven't been paying any attention to -- of writers claiming (or believing) that their seemingly 100% flavour-text projects are somehow system restricted. Several books were listed with the author doing a lot of 5e thumping with zero mention of anything else, but their books actually appear to be OSR-style encounter tables or whatnot.

Gotta love a functional monopoly, eh?

Anyway, there are no Pathfinder-specific projects live right now, though there are a couple that have cropped up claiming to be 'Launching Soon'.

If you've got anything PF2e related on your DriveThru RPG wishlist, it's not a bad time to take a look at it. Quite a few titles are on sale right now!

I'm looking at handing out some Relics to my players, but I'm having some difficulty understanding the guudance on Relic gifts in the GM Core. Specifically, I've been somewhat broken by the treasure-by-level table, and it's not clear to me whether a Relic us suppised to get 2 minor gifts at Level 5 and 3 major gifits at Level 10, or if it should receive its second gift at Level 5 and its third at Level 10, and those gifts should be a minor and major gift, respectively.

My default assumption is the latter, but... You know... Treasure by level...

Another quiet week this week. It kind of felt like there was something else going on or something, though I can't quite put my finger on what it might have been. It does look like there's a fair bit of system neutral fantasy projects in the chamber waiting to fire in the new year, though. January looks to be maybe a bit quieter, but several projects have signalled a possible February launch date, and March looks positively packed.

u/JM-the-GM over on Reddit is offering to run new players through Menace Under Otari in January. If you know anyone who might be interested trying the game out, and they use Discord, it might be worth a look.

I will be running Menace Under Otari for new players or players that haven't played it yet free of charge through the month of January. The module will consist of 2-3 3 hour sessions. We will be utilizing Foundry for the game and Discord for communication. If interested, please send me a DM or contact me on discord at JM_the_GM

Not a whole lot of news in the world of crowd funding this week. A bunch of campaigns have wrapped, with nothing new on the PF/System Neutral front materializing. We do have a couple of SN projects coming to a close in the next week, though.

I've gone back to add some additional fields to my growing set of campaign data, including whether campaigns are taking late pledges. I'm still collecting data by hand, though, so changes to the status of these finished campaigns may get missed.

As the year closes out, though, it seems to have been a fairly good one for projects supporting Pathfinder, both 2e and 1e. I'm looking forward to growing my library of monsters I'll never get an opportunity to use in 2025.

I missed last week due to work and family commitments. I spent some time this week actually setting up a recording, storage, and filtering system for what I'm tracking, and it should reduce the amount of time it takes me to actually output stuff going forward, I it shouldn't be an issue again.

That said, last Friday saw a bunch of projects ending, as they rushed to get Print-on-Demand books out the door and in peoples' hands before Christmas. Things are a little slower this week, with only one Pathfinder-specific project of note coming or going: BattleZoo Ancestries: Titans.

Many projects are taking late pledges, though. I'm going to update things this week and try to list some of those going forward, starting next week.

For those that don't know, Narrative Declaration is a comedy actual play troupe that deals deals primarily in Pathfinder 2e. Fronted by Zoran the Bear, a VTuber who formerly worked as Paizo's social media manager, and Thursdon Hillman, the creative director of Starfinder 2e, they've produced several actual play series in recent years, most notably Rotgrind.

A couple of years ago, they expanded, and started a couple of other shows: Rotgoons, which is set in the same world as Rotgrind (a homebrew setting called Tyne), which recently went on hiatus, and Abomination Vaults, which attempted to do the Beginner's Box -> Abomination Vaults arc.

Abomination Vaults only lasted 16 or 17 episodes, but it was my personal entry point into the NarDec world. I came across it while preparing to run the Beginner's Box for my family back in 2023, and got hooked on the series juuuuuust as it was coming to an end. As disappointing as that was, at least there was the finale to look forward to, right?

Well, part 1 of that finale finally dropped this week, and I'm super excited about it. It only took, like, a year and a half, but it's up, and the series will finally be publicly available in full. And since Friday is the day where I, apparently, just publicly shill for things I find interesting, like a the good consumer that I am, I thought I'd share it here.

The episode starts with an explanation from Zoran as to why the series ended -- financial pressures around the cost to produce the series, and it's lagging performance, as well as Zoran feeling like he wasn't GMing well enough -- and a question: Now that Narrative Declaration is on more financially stable footing, would people want to see the series rebooted, or the original cast come back.

Check it out, and see if you'd like to see them try again. Also, check out their more recent Kingmaker campaign to see how the show quality has evolved over time, and to get an idea of what a new AP-based campaign might look like. They've paywalled Kingmaker behind Patreon, but the first episode is currently available for free on YouTube, and they're supposed to be releasing episodes 2 - 5 there over the month of December.

Or check out their Warhammer 40k Wrath and Glory mini-campaign, where they're playing the Grim Harvest scenario from Litanies of the Lost, which is what they're currently doing between Rotgrind seasons.

In a 20 minute Twitch stream (linked in the title), Paizo announced two new classes being play tested starting next week:

The Runesmith

A slotless support caster/"melee magician" that invokes both passive and active "spell" effects by drawing runes on everything.

The Necromancer

A prepared Occult caster that summons undead "thralls" to do their bidding. Thralls sound like they are cheap, disposable summons intended to be utilized as an encounter resource.

We should get our hands on the playtest resources on 9 December. As someone who's gone from playing a Champion to a Guardian, I'm pretty pumped to have another melee support class. There's been an embarrassment of riches this year for support players who don't want to use spells! It's kind of giving me WoW Shaman vibes (which, of course, was my WoW class).

So, I'm running the original 3e version of Forge of Fury, and my players are about to meet Idalla, the succubus. In the 3e version of the dungeon, Idalla is bound to the room, and just wants to leave. If she's attacked by a Good aligned character, she is free to leave... for some reason. Or, if she's granted permission from a Good aligned character, she's also free to leave.

I'm not at all sure how to run this. I foresee her explaining to the party that she's been magically bound to the room, and that the spell is broken just by giving permission, and then the party just... does. And she teleports away.

That seems totally pointless.

I really like the idea of there being a powerful being trapped in this room, though. It serves my purpose to have some sort of unexpected guardian in this space, and a filter that allows Good aligned characters through is really convenient in its own right.

Clearly, the solution is how I play the character, then, but I just cannot get myself inside her head. How do I make this interesting, and last longer than a single back-and-forth verbal exchange? The module gives her only real goal as being to leave, and I don't have a reasonable, interesting alternative.

Have you run this module before? How have you handled Idalla?
