Tigers have spots like that to trick potential predators when drinking

As tigers usually attack from behind, wearing a mask with eyes on the back of the head works also to prevent tiger attacks.

Cats have patches with thinner hair on the tops of their heads, so that to birds of prey above, they look as if they were awake and alert.
