Cute, but the driver's complete lack of safety gear is unnerving.

I'm more concerned about the cat. The rider can take his own risks, but the cat is not capable of articulating its opinions on the matter.

That appears to be a Honda Navi, which has me wondering why it has a low power scooter sticker (the blue thing) rather than a license plate. As far as I can tell Colorado should class that as a full-on motorcycle with all of the obligations required thereof, since the displacement limit is 50cc and the Navi is 109cc.

Pretty sure that's a 50cc Ruckus.

But seriously, fuck this guy for putting his cat in danger to look cool. Vet appointment? Denver actually has public transport.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

tubular frame, underbone style = Rukus. Great scooters.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It might be. If so, he gets away with no plate. I dunno about CO but where I am you "technically" don't need a helmet to ride a 50cc but it's still obviously not a great idea.

Edit: Actually, you can see the edge of one of the round headlights peeking out of the side there, which I missed. Yeah, it's a Ruckus (or a clone thereof).

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago

There are countless Navi clones out of china

If the cat was stressed, it would let the owner know, and certainly wouldn't allow itself to get in the box again.

As far as risks go, in the US, bikes are ~30x more dangerous per mile, but you can cut that to ~5x by not drinking and speeding, and probably more by being extra cautious of cars.

[–] seathru@quokk.au 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Or you can just choose not to put your cat in that situation and it cuts those risks by 100%

My cat loves riding on the passenger side of the dash in my truck when we go places. But do I let him be out of his carrier on streets with other drivers? Fuck no, good chance those other drivers are idiots.

Edit: Relevant cat tax

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He's not on streets with other drivers, He's in a bike-mounted carrier. If its safe enough for people, its safe enough for an animal light enough to jump off buildings.

[–] seathru@quokk.au 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He’s in a bike-mounted carrier.

With other drivers... Ever been rear ended on a motorcycle while waiting on a light? I have, and can say there is very little you can do about it. Everybody has to determine the risks they are willing to take. I still ride but there's absolutely no way I would bring my cat (even tho he would love it), I kind of like him.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ever been rear ended on a motorcycle while waiting on a light?

Yes, also hit by a truck that rolled back on an incline. Lesson: always filter to be next the cars at the red lights.

[–] seathru@quokk.au 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Then you realize how silly

He’s in a bike-mounted carrier. If its safe enough for people, its safe enough for an animal light enough to jump off buildings.

sounds?

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I was hit because I was doing something unsafe, not filtering at a light. Since I stopped doing that, I can no longer be hit by cars failing to brake or trucks rolling back at red lights.

[–] seathru@quokk.au 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

So what happens if you're the only person at that light? Pull up next to the pole?

I can no longer be hit by cars failing to brake

LOL

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago

Sit on the left or rightmost line, watch your mirrors.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

You can cut risk by 50% keeping of roads friday and saturday nights.

[–] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Are plates not required on mopeds in the US?

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Probably depends on the state.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I'd worry that the cat can jump out. Then again, transparent backpacks apparently get hot and stuffy. I wonder if a non-transparent backpack with a plastic window and ventilation slits could work (or just with a grille instead of the window).

There are various backpacks with transparent plastic observation domes, which I think are included in 'too little air'. I'm guessing a grille dome would work better.

Edit: maybe something like this:

[–] Zorcron@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

I have a backpack similar to the second one with mesh windows on the front, top, and small side windows and it’s great. No breaking out, and great airflow when it’s warmer.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz -1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

It looks like the hole is too small for the car to get out.

[–] AltheaHunter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago

cats are liquid

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Cats are known to fit basically where their head can get through.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 0 points 2 weeks ago

We can test this.

Try cutting a hole the size of your cat's head minus fur in a box, then reinforce with ducttape. Then wave a toy outside the hole. They will quite enjoy swatting things through it, but fail to actually get through.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That looks like an inverted figurehead.

[–] Pissmidget@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Figurehead is the right way around, the captain is looking backwards though...
