It's worth mentioning that during the dark ages, it was actually monks who preserved history and scientific knowledge, and advanced it. Even afterwards, Mendelian genetics was discovered by Gregor Mendel, a friar and abbot.

On top of that though, a lot of scientific knowledge and mathematics was preserved and cultivated by Islamic empires concurrent to the dark ages. They were in the middle of a golden age and progressed those fields further.

The problem isn't so much religion in itself, but evangelicals and literalists who put it above everything else. Zealots ruin it all.

Hamas is terrible as well, and this is why an investigation is necessary, but Occam's Razor suggests it is likely the IDF. The IDF needs to show total transparency in a global investigation.

With how often we spar, I feel it's worth mentioning that I fully agree with you here. There's enough substantial evidence. This is horrific.

Between this and the IDF disguising itself as civilians and doctors to kill targets in a hospital, it's fairly clear that the organization needs to completely disband as part of any peace agreement.

Thanks for the AJ link, genuinely. That as good as confirms it.

Christ, I'm speechless.

It gets even worse, because it means they don't have great access to information either.

There was a video soon after Oct 7 that showed Palestinians celebrating in the streets. They hadn't been told about the civilian deaths or kidnappings though, only that a prison had been liberated. And that context wasn't shown alongside their celebrations when Israelis saw it.

The suppression of information has led to misunderstandings that perpetuate the hate and the war. Just as Netanyahu wants, I suspect.

Feeding a person.

It's hard to make much analysis without knowing the exact culprit, but I think it's certain to say they made a very bad choice.

Yeah, or about Russia invading Ukraine! Wait.

If you look at documents at the time, intelligence agencies said there was a possibility he had WMDs, but there was no conclusive evidence nor assurances.

The Bush Administration lied to Congress and said we knew for sure they had them.

Edit: It's good to have healthy skepticism -- it hasn't escaped my notice that the majority of evidence behind this claim is coming from Israel. I don't think it's wise to deem it automatically false however, and pulling funding is premature. There should however be a serious internal investigation. And if they already have smoking guns, the UN should release them in the interest of transparency.

Apologies for starting out my comment as a bit of a jackass.

Complaining by wasting food certainly invalidates the message however.

There's three types of protestors in the world:

  1. Cause minimal, non serious disruption. Spread the message without pissing people off, because that'll make people more receptive to joining you.

  2. Cause serious disruptions, even if it pisses people off, because it brings attention to the issue makes it impossible to ignore.

  3. Bring attention to an issue at all costs by any means necessary, even if it makes the issue worse or has absolutely nothing to do with the issue. Be an asshole to make people listen.

There's a valid argument that without 2, people won't take something seriously, and mild inconveniences are the whole point of nonviolent protest. It gets a bit morally grey when it would do something like prevent an ambulance from operating though. I don't think anyone who normally waves that away would feel the same if it resulted in the death of a loved one.

And 3 is just clout chasers imo, like in this situation. I can't take someone protesting food insecurity seriously if they're wasting food to do so.

Killing yourself to protest climate change isn't a climate issue, it's a mental health issue.

This is an excellent article. It follows an Israeli peace activist and a Palestinian peace activist who work together with a group that believes communication between Israelis and Palestinians is paramount to having a peaceful resolution.

What it does really well is highlight how the two of them talk past each other and don't realize it -- one of them makes an innocuous comment, and the other thinks it's something bad but doesn't speak up necessarily.

The article also provides really good perspective on how misinformation and fog of war are affecting the conflict. It highlights situations where Israelis are lied to and shown selective news, and where Palestinians are lied to and shown selective news.
